Denmark
Danish people welcome the New Year by throwing old plates and glasses against the doors of their friends and family for banishing bad spirits. They also stand on chairs and jump off of them at the same time at midnight for leaping into January in hopes of good luck.
Finland
The people of Finland predict the coming year by casting molten tin into a container filled with water and then interpret the shape acquired by the metal after it gets hardened. A ring or heart symbolizes a wedding, while a ship predicts travel and a pig means there will be plenty of food.
Panama
To ward off evil spirits for a fresh start of the New Year, residents of Panama burn effigies (muñecos) of well-known people like political figures and television characters. Such effigies symbolize the old year.
Scotland
In Scotland, New Year’s Eve and celebrations associated with it are called Hogmanay. To celebrate Hogmanay, people practice “first footing” across the country. The first person who crosses a home’s threshold in the New Year has to carry a gift for luck. People also hold bonfire ceremonies where they parade while swinging giant fireballs on poles, which are symbols of the sun, for purifying the coming year.
